NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has invested a massive £154,000 to buy 11 state-of-the-art dialysis machines for the Vale of Leven Hospital Renal Unit.
The substantial investment follows the green light from the Cabinet Secretary last year to the “Vision for the Vale” document detailing plans to ensure that vital health services remain locally.
Eight of the machines will be used on a regular basis by 32 patients, with the other three kept as “spares” to be brought into use when the others require servicing or maintenance.
Dialysis at the unit is carried out in two shifts, between 8am and 1pm and from 2pm to 8pm.
Margaret Lucas, NHSGGC’s Clincal Service Manager for Renal Services, said: “These are the most up-to-date dialysis machines available and their purchase is a reflection of our commitment to maintaining high levels of service to the Vale of Leven renal unit.”
Bill Brackenridge, Chair of the Vale of Leven Monitoring Group, welcomed the investment, adding: "It's encouraging to see another aspect of the Vision for the Vale taking shape."
The establishment of the monitoring group, which includes local representatives, service users and carers, is charged with overseeing the development and delivery of the Vision to ensure the long term of the Vale of Leven.
The dialysis investment is part of the overall plan which includes finalising arrangements for unscheduled care and rehabilitation models through talks with local consultants and GPs, and a consultant recruitment drive is currently underway.
Once in place this will mean an extra 18,350 patient attendances to the Vale, and fewer local people having to travel elsewhere for hospital care.
In addition NHSGGC will sustain more than 70 per cent of unscheduled medical admission at the hospital.
