The UK Parkinson’s Excellence Network has appointed internationally renowned Parkinson’s specialist Dr Donald Grosset from Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital as its new Clinical Director to continue driving forward the standard of care for people with the condition.
Dr Grosset will build on the foundations laid by previous director Professor David Burn, who oversaw the launch of the Excellence Network two years ago, bringing together health and social care professionals to transform the support that people with Parkinson’s receive.
In addition, with more than twenty years of clinical experience as a movement disorders specialist, Dr Grosset has an extensive background in research that has been published widely in Movement Disorders, Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, and the Journal of Parkinson’s Disease. He also currently leads the ground-breaking Tracking Parkinson’s study, the world’s largest in-depth study to improve our understanding of the condition.
Already familiar with the Excellence Network through his position as lead for the West of Scotland region, Dr Grosset will take on this new role alongside his responsibilities as Consultant Neurologist at the Institute of Neurological Sciences at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Honorary Professor in Neurology at the University of Glasgow.
Dr Grosset, said: “I’ve been involved with the Excellence Network since its inception and firmly believe in its aim to promote an inclusive team ethic amongst professionals who support people with Parkinson’s.
“It is essential that we continue to share knowledge and best practice while maintaining the involvement of people affected by the condition, but we can also take inspiration from current research that suggests how we can make improvements to accuracy of diagnosis, timeliness of support and delivery of care.
“I have lots of ideas for the Network going forward and am excited to work with a cross-discipline group of professionals to help make further improvements to the care and support for people with the condition across the UK.”
Gary Jenkins, Director of Regional Services, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “I would like to congratulate Donald on this appointment. He will bring with him a wealthy of experience and knowledge.”
The UK Parkinson’s Excellence Network was established in 2015 by Parkinson’s UK, alongside leading clinicians, to drive improvements in Parkinson’s care. The Network aims to achieve consistent, high quality services for people with Parkinson’s in the UK by sharing evidence, training, tools to support best practice and opportunities for collaboration. It works to ensure the views and experiences of people affected by this complex, long term, neurological condition are at the forefront of service improvement.
