Eight new radiologists have been appointed by Scotland’s largest health board.
Radiologists are highly sought after across the entire UK, however we have secured a further eight to take the total number to 106 throughout the Board area.
An essential part of modern healthcare, radiologists are medical doctors specialising in diagnosing and treating diseases such as cancer as well as injuries using medical imaging techniques including:
They also collaborate closely with other doctors and staff from a wide range of medical specialties, and offer specialist expertise and guidance. Radiologists are often called upon to perform image guided procedures, such a biopsies, drainages and targeted injections, to directly enable diagnosis and treatment of patients.
The appointments see two new radiologists in the South Sector, three at the Institute of Neuro Sciences, one in the North sector, one in the Clyde sector and a vascular interventional radiologist who will be based in QEUH.
Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said: “It is hugely encouraging to see the board recruit eight radiologists. Earlier in the year an international radiology recruitment campaign, which we supported, generated interest from clinicians around the globe.
"We are also working closely with the Royal College of Radiologists to increase training places. This includes specialty training places, which will increase approximately 75% by 2022, compared to 2014.
“We have invested over £4 million in the national Radiology Transformation Programme to significantly improve diagnostic imaging capacity across the country, demonstrating our ambition to delivering some of the best radiology services in the world.”
Lynn Ross, Interim Director of Diagnostics, NHSGGC, said: “It’s fantastic to have recruited such a large cohort of radiologists in such a short time frame. Imaging is at the heart of modern medicine and is an essential part of many treatments. Radiologists play a vital role in swift and accurate diagnosis of many conditions.
"To have secured eight clearly shows that, as a Board, we are viewed as an attractive and prestigious employer. It also demonstrates our commitment to be a dynamic and patient-centred Board, staffed by some of the very best clinicians from around the world.
“Our new team members will be joining an already highly-skilled workforce. They will bring a level of expertise which will support our existing staff and play a major role in providing quality care for our patients.
“We are always looking to improve our service and, by investing in our future through this new cohort, we’re ensuring we’re well placed to meet the developments we see in the continual evolution of radiology services.”
