A Celebration of All That is Great About the NHS on Its 70th Anniversary

Tuesday, November 6, 2018

Another special event for staff from across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) took place last night when approximately 400 people gathered together to celebrate ‘all that is great about the NHS’ and announced this year's Chairman’s Award winners and the Facing The Future Together overall award winners at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.

This year the NHS celebrated its 70th anniversary and this set the scene for a night to honour staff who show case the quality and commitment of NHSGGC’s workforce.

It is also the third year running that the event also presented the William Cullen prizes for Innovation and for Teaching, in conjunction with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

This year’s overall winner of the Special Judges Award of Excellence went to Inverclyde Home 1st.

The Home 1st approach is that people are supported better and achieve improved outcomes when health and social care is provided in their home or community and to maintain people’s independence where possible.

Close partnership work with colleagues at Inverclyde Royal Hospital allows the early commencement of assessments on future care needs in collaboration with the patient and family at an early stage.  A clear identification of what is required when a patient is discharged are all key elements of achieving an appropriate, timely and safe discharge.

The result is that the majority of patients are assessed and discharged home as soon as they are deemed medically fit, including those requiring a complex home care package or a care home placement.

The emphasis on planning the Hospital discharge process from a community perspective has also helped facilitate a rapid discharge planning process and in some cases prevented hospital admission when it wasn’t required.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Chairman, John Brown said:  "2018 had been a tremendous year of celebration marking the 70th anniversary of the NHS.

“Local and national events involving staff and patients had been both poignant and fun but that for me the pinnacle of all celebrations was last night’s NHSGGC Staff Awards!

“Once again this year we were overwhelmed by the number and quality of the entries across the range of categories and examples of our staff going above and beyond for patients and other colleagues.

“These awards are about us showcasing the true quality of our workforce and their commitment to delivering the very best in patient care.”

“And another bit of Board history was made with introduction of Scotland’s first Global Citizen Award.

“This will set the tone for the rest of Scotland to follow as the nation sets out to give special recognition to healthcare volunteers who serve overseas to tackle poverty, injustice and gross inequality.”
