Visiting times:

Visiting times are flexible to suit the needs of our patients, their family and carers.

We are piloting a change to our visiting times. This means:

  • We have no set visiting times
  • Please discuss with the person you are visiting and staff when it would be good for you to be here
  • We will always welcome and encourage your involvement and support
  • Sometimes we may need to ask you to leave the ward temporarily, to ensure privacy, safety, space and rest for patients
  • If you have any questions please just ask.

Sometimes patients would like a family member with them to provide support. If this is the case we can accommodate a member of family or carer to stay overnight . If you wish to stay please speak to the nurse in charge

It is lovely to have children visit but please supervise them at all times.

Mealtimes

Approximate mealtimes are
7.30 – 8.30am for breakfast
12.00 – 1.00pm for lunch
5.00 – 6.00pm for the evening meal

Family, friends and carers can play an important role in encouraging patients with small appetites to eat a little bit more. It is important that you discuss with staff if you can help with mealtimes on wards.

This is an Emergency Department. We prioritise people who have a serious injury or accident or who have a sudden serious illness or medical condition. It may be more appropriate and you may be seen more quickly by your GP or another health care professional rather than waiting for treatment here.

If you think that someone's life is at risk you should call 999 right away.

A&E and Minor Injuries Services are available in a number of locations. Use our postcode finder to see which is the right one for you.

You can attend your local Minor Injury Unit (MIU) to get urgent care for a minor injury including sprains, burns and simple fractures. MIUs are run by highly experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners who will assess and either treat a minor injury or, if they find a more serious problem, arrange for you to be transferred elsewhere.

Children with serious illnesses and injuries who are less than one year of age should be taken to the Royal Hospital for Children, Govan, Glasgow. Children from one year on should either go to your designated A&E department or to the Royal Hospital for Children.

You can find out more about which conditions may be seen and treated more quickly elsewhere from our Know who to turn to pages.

The Healthcare Chaplains for Glasgow Royal Infirmary can be contacted on 0141 211 4661.

The Chapel is on the ground floor in the Centre Block of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Old Building. It is regularly used by patients, staff and visitors as a place of quiet reflection and prayer.   The Chapel is traditional in design with attractive and interesting stained glass.  Access to the Chapel is via a short flight of steps, with a wheelchair lift available to those with walking difficulties.

The Chapel is open daily from 7am-7pm. Out with these hours a member of the Security Staff will unlock the door for anyone wishing access.

The Chaplain’s Office is situated to the rear of the chapel.

A Quiet Room is on the 1st floor of the Surgical Block, Old Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary.  Comfortable seating, reading material, washing facilities and a prayer area are provided.

The Chaplaincy Service delivers spiritual and religious care to all people.  Spiritual care addresses the fundamental human need to have a sense of peace, security and hope particularly in the context of injury, illness or loss.  Healthcare Chaplains do this by being attentive to the patient’s story, looking for sources of strength and resilience, valuing the person and what is most important to them. Religious care can be a crucial aspect of this.  Healthcare Chaplains work with other NHS staff to ensure that these needs are met and, where appropriate, in partnership with local faith and belief groups.

Please visit our web page for more information on the Spiritual Care and Healthcare Chaplaincy Service.

If you have a general  enquiry you can email us on chaplains@ggc.scot.nhs.uk and our patient leaflet can be accessed here NHSGGC Spiritual Care Team Patient Leaflet 2019.

An NHS Healthcare Chaplain is always on-call and ward staff can arrange for them to be paged.  A Roman Catholic Priest is also available at all times.

Opening hours:

The Chapel is open daily from 7am-7pm. Outwith these hours a member of the Security Staff will unlock the door for anyone wishing access.
