Nearly 2/3rds of the adult population are overweight or obese. NHSGGC staff are no different with recent surveys suggesting nurses and health care workers may even have higher levels of obesity.
Keeping a healthy weight or losing some weight has some real health benefits. By losing just 5kg you will immediately lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels and can improve your mobility and reduce aches and pains!
Staying focussed and making the changes long term can be a challenge but don’t lose heart, many of us are in the same situation and helping each other can make it easier.
So whether your goal is about shedding the excess pounds or fitting into your clothes, below are services and links that can help you stay motivated or give you some practical support.

Are you a healthy weight?
Glasgow and Clyde Weight Management Services are targeted to people with existing health conditions that will be improved by losing weight. So if you have Diabetes; Heart Disease or have previously had a Stroke and have a BMI of >30 then you can self refer to the weight management service by calling the following number:

Both services are free to people living in the Greater Glasgow & Clyde area who are overweight and have a relevant health condition.
Weigh in at Work
Doing it with others makes everything feel easier. Why not try Weigh in at Work, a self help resource available for you and a group of colleagues at work to adopt a healthy eating and physical activity approach. Weekly weigh-ins and some friendly peer pressure can be all a group of colleagues need to get going. Find a time and location that suits you.
Weigh in at Work sessions also run in Support and Information services in the QUEH; Victoria ACH and Stobhill ACH.
Getting started with your own Weight Loss Plan
If you want to lose weight, making small, realistic changes to your diet and level of physical exercise will help you kick-start your weight-loss journey. Our practical guide Eat Well Feel Good Look Great Lose Weight (pdf) will help get you started and build the foundations for a successful, effective weight loss that you can maintain over the long term.
There are lots of initiatives promoting healthy choices on the high street but the following NHS programmes can provide more information on healthy diets; hints and tips about healthy cooking and shopping and healthy choices when eating out.
Healthy Eating choices at work
NHSGGC has a Food Retail Policy ensuring healthy choices are widely available to staff as well as visitors and patients and includes all retail outlets, café and dining facilities, trolley services, vending services, catering for events and functions. All facilities are required to provide Healthy Choices in line with the Healthy Living Award criteria and/ or the Healthcare Retail Standards.
The active promotion of healthy choices to staff is a key strand of the policy so look out for promotional offers and activities during 2017.
Physical activity can help support weight loss as well as boosting our energy and lifting our mood so whether you want to de-stress, lose weight quicker, tone up or achieve your fitness goals Active Staff can help. Active staff supports a wide range of activities ranging from pedometer challenges, reduced price for your gym membership and onsite activities available to staff ranging from Tai Chi and Yoga to Metafit and Fatburn Extreme.
