Informing and engaging - Ward 15 pre consultation

In 2011 there was a proposal by the Women and Children’s Services Directorate to move the Paediatric Inpatient Services in Ward 15 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill.  Following extensive engagement on the proposal and options with patients, parents, families and professionals, the preferred option was to transfer the inpatient service when the new Royal Hospital for Children opened on the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospitals Campus. Please click here for more information about this options appraisal exercise.

Against this background we are proposing to proceed with the preferred option; to transfer paediatric emergency and elective inpatient and day case care from the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley to the Royal Hospital for Children, with the retention of outpatient services, the specialist Community Paediatric service (PANDA), and emergency care for those who self-refer at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

In September 2016, we began re informing and engaging with people to tell them about our proposal, what has happened so far, and to find out what people think about it.

We did this by:

  • Meeting with a small group of parents, carers, parents and carers representatives, and community groups, who offered their perspectives on how we could inform and engage with patients, carers and the public on the Board’s proposal. Click here for terms of reference of this group, and minutes from the first and second meetings
  • Offered patients or families who were concerned about the potential impact of the proposal on the clinical care of themselves or their loved one, the opportunity to discuss this individually with an appropriate clinician
  • Holding drop in sessions near Ward 15 in the Royal Alexandra Hospital, so parents or patients using Ward 15 could speak to us in person
  • Hosting two public events in the last week of September where people could come and hear about our proposal, and tell us what they think about it. Click here for the slides used at these meetings
  • Widely promoting the opportunity for people to speak with a Patient Experience Public Involvement Manager, Rachel Killick, who was facilitating the engagement with patients, carers, members of the public, and wider communities. Rachel’s phone number (0141 201 0309) and email address ( was be circulated so all those who wish to find out more could do so.

In October 2016 we reported to the Board of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC) about what we did and heard. Click here for a copy of the Board paper. The Board decided at this meeting to proceed to a full 3 month public consultation on the proposal.
